How Dim Accreting Black Holes Could Be?

چکیده
Recent hydrodynamical simulations of radiatively inefficient black hole accretion flows with low viscosity have demonstrated that these flows differ significantly from those described by an advection-dominated model. The black hole flows are advectiondominated only in their inner parts, but convectively dominated at radii R ∼ > 10RG. In such flows, the radiative output comes mostly from the convection part, and the radiative efficiency is independent of accretion rate and equals ǫBH ≃ 10 . This value gives a limit for how dim an accreting black hole could be. It agrees with recent Chandra observations which indicate that accreting black holes in low-mass X-ray binaries are by factor about 100 dimmer than neutron stars accreting with the same accretion rates. The Blandford-znajek Mechanism and Emission from Isolated Accreting Black Holes
In the presence of a magnetic field, rotational energy can be extracted from black holes via the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. We use self-similar advection dominated accretion (ADAF) models to estimate the efficiency of this mechanism for black holes accreting from geometrically thick disks, in the light of recent magnetohydrodynamic disk simulations, and show that the power from electromagnetic...
متن کاملFrom Multiwavelength to Mass Scaling: Accretion and Ejection in Microquasars and AGN
A solid theoretical understanding of how inflowing, accreting plasma around black holes and other compact objects gives rise to outflowing winds and jets is still lacking, despite decades of observations. The fact that similar processes and morphologies are observed in both X-ray binaries as well as active galactic nuclei has led to suggestions that the underlying physics could scale with black...
متن کاملHot Accretion with Saturated Conduction
Observations of the hot gas surrounding Sgr A* and a few other nearby galactic nuclei imply electron and proton mean free paths comparable to the gas capture radius: hot accretion likely proceeds under weakly-collisional conditions in these systems. As a result, thermal conduction, rather than convection, may be important on all scales and affect the global flow properties. The self-similar ADA...
متن کاملMeasurements of Black Hole Spins and Tests of Strong-Field General Relativity
Fast variability studies of accreting black holes in the Galaxy offer us a unique opportunity to measure the spins of black holes and test the strong-field behavior of general relativity. In this review, I summarize the arguments often used in attempts of measuring the spins of black holes, concentrating on their theoretical foundations. I also argue that X-ray studies of accreting black holes ...
متن کاملEnergy Extraction from Spinning Black Holes Via Relativistic Jets
It has for long been an article of faith among astrophysicists that black hole spin energy is responsible for powering the relativistic jets seen in accreting black holes. Two recent advances have strengthened the case. First, numerical general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accreting spinning black holes show that relativistic jets form spontaneously. In at least some cases, t...
